Commonwealth Games – Glasgow 2014 – Part 12

This was the final day of the Games. Rain bucketed down for much of the time, but it did not deter the 139 cyclists who set off at the start of the Men’s Cycle Road Race. Inevitably the rain and strong wind had an effect causing riders to be cautious when taking bends and where water lodged on the ground.

Geraint Thomas crossed the finish line to earn a gold medal for himself and for Wales – a first time for a Welshman in the history of the Games in a cycling event. Geraint had a good lead over his closest rivals, Jack Bauer from New Zealand who pipped Scott Thwaites in a sprint finish for silver and bronze. Thomas very nearly lost his chance of gaining gold because of a temporary halt on account of a puncture requiring a wheel replacement which was agonisingly slow.
